New Years Resolutions: Charitable Giving 2020

When the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, we left another year behind us and wiped the slate clean. Everyone is looking forward to what can be in 2020. Many of us make the same New Year’s resolutions: to eat better, to exercise, to get organized. These are all really great resolutions because they help improve our lives. However, if you’re looking for something more from life during the next year and beyond, it is not too late to make a New Year’s resolution to get more involved in supporting a nonprofit charity like Giving Center.

Volunteer on Your Terms

Not everyone may be able to support their favorite charity financially, but everyone can give their time. Volunteers are the lifeblood of nonprofit community, enabling charities to execute their missions with less staff. Where does your favorite charity need help the most? Everything from answering phones and stuffing envelopes, to helping plan an event or serving on a board, you can make a difference.
Or, determine how you would like to volunteer. Would you like to use your professional skills, such as graphic design, accounting or data entry? Or, do you want to step outside your comfort zone and do something like serving as a public speaker on behalf of a charity? You can look for an organization that needs help in areas that match your professional skills…or those that you would like to develop. Both of you will benefit from the experience.

Advocate for a Cause

Help a nonprofit tell its story. Spread the word about its mission, its fundraisers and testimonials from people benefiting from its programs. You can forward the organization’s newsletters, share its Facebook posts, and even re-tweet its Twitter feeds. Your communication efforts can have a ripple effect in generating brand awareness.

Donate to Charity

And, of course, there is donating financially and donating assets directly to charity. While some people say “it‘s not truly charity if you receive something in return (tax deduction),” we all like the tax benefit that comes with charitable giving. Regardless of whether or not you itemize deductions, charities need our help. The work they do and their need for our financial support has not changed just because the tax laws have changed. With charitable giving expected to decrease, their need for our financial support and charitable donations will be greater than ever.

Make 2–0–2–0 Great

Help make 2020 a great year for Giving Center or other nonprofit communities. Whether you decide to donate, volunteer or advocate, your efforts will help charities increase their fundraising capacity and expand their missions. You can play a personal role in helping Giving Center make a better world for everyone to live, work and play.
